Life Science Excursion

My experience at Cape Point nature reserve

Today was one of the many times I have been at Cape Point nature reserve because I used to be a junior ranger. Junior Rangers is a voluntary course in which we learn the basics of conservation. I used to go to Cape Point nature reserve at least twice a month to learn all about nature. I have also hiked every hiking trail within the nature reserve with my parents because my parents own a hiking club for the children of marine primary school. Nevertheless, I still enjoy every time I go to the reserve because this time it was with all my friends. The bus drive was really long from Bellville to the nature reserve and it started to make me feel nauseous, but as soon as we got to the lighthouse, the smell of the sea felt really revitalizing. That was something I've been missing out on for way too long, since I haven’t been to the beach in ages.

Shortly after, we had to hike to the lighthouse which was really fun because of how certain people reacted towards the Chacma Baboons and the wind which was really turbulent. Some people where even brave enough to sit right next to the baboons as we went to the top of the lighthouse. As soon as we went to the top of the lighthouse, I immediately noticed that there was something missing on the lighthouse. It was the post that displayed all the directions of various countries and the amount of distance from the lighthouse towards them.  It was still fun on top of the lighthouse seeing tourists from various countries. Out of all the tourists I could only tell that some of the people where from China, France and Netherlands. Seeing over the peak of the cliff was a very majestic experience because, as low as that cliff is, it felt as if I was on top of the world.

After the trip to the lighthouse we went to the side of the cliff which was near the beach. This is where a few people hiked up the mountain to gaze at the vast ocean or to feel the strength of the wind against us.
When I was up at the top of the cliff I was able to lean my body 45 degrees forward and not fall because of the wind. Since it was so windy, climbing to the top gave me a head ache and made my ears really sore. That was the signal that I should just hike back down. Unfortunately when we were on the bus to go to another hike, it had started raining, cancelling the plans we had for an hour or so.

Even though I had a good time, I didn't really understand the point of this excursion and giving us an assignment that required the internet, when there weren't even people that could have taught us about the history of the reserve or on the certain stuff on the assignment to do with conservation.

My thoughts on the ECP program
Since high school I have always liked having Life science as a subject. Life science is so interesting and we are even allowed to dissect animals, which I cannot wait for. Although the work we do in the first year is only an in depth recap of the work we did in matric. I was hoping to do completely different and new work this year, even though I'm in the first year of the four year course, like we do in Maths 150 but it was the same old same old. Nevertheless LFS (Life Science) is still very interesting and I can't wait for the new work we are going to do next year. That is if I even make it to the second year but it won't be because my marks are bad within LFS, rather because of the devils subject ISC. ISC is a very unpredictable subject because of the little information they give about our marks so they sneakily fail you if you slip up. Which I hope doesn't happen to me but the fear is still there. Actually I think ISC is like a ninja who will mercilessly kill in the shadows of education.  But what a better way to explain my feelings towards ISC than the words of the great Albert Einstein, “Two things are infinite: the universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe.”
The only subject that makes me feel like a university student is maths because of the ‘feel’ maths has. It’s like a typical American movie lecture, where the lecturer knows everything and just captivates you with his knowledge. Not that LFS’s lectures aren’t as knowledgeable but the work is all basic. However I think that my LFS Lecturer is a great lecturer and I hope that we get her next year as well. I like being in the Faculty of science and I think that it will bring me one step closer to saving the world within BCB. The people with in LFS aren’t bad to. I think that everyone in university is interesting especially within the faculty of science. For example, when I was in high school the people were very basic and typical because they liked everything I liked, and it was kind of boring. But in university there is a diverse group of people and everyone is different. I think its way better this way and that I can have much more interesting conversations with them, especially with the women in university. As soon as I got to university that has been the only thing on my mind because in high school I was too scared of what other people would think of me that I didn’t try to get a girlfriend. However that isn’t the case anymore and I shall devote all my free time to get a girlfriend in university. Unfortunately, that state of mind is easier than it looks because I still don’t have a girlfriend but I shall keep on trying.
